Everything Jan Kruitwagen touches seems to turn to gold-including Het Zwarte Dictaat. Boasting beefier production, eerier keyboards, as well as even more menacing riffs and atmosphere than were present on Stormkult (itself an amazing album), this album is easily one of the best of 2021.

This is my favorite album by Mexican death metal stalwarts The Chasm, by a wide margin. All the meandering, proggy excursions of previous releases have been brutally curtailed in favor of mountains on mountains of riffs, and the result is a release that is tighter and more focused than any of their output in the last decade+. Consider my interest renewed. Patiently awaiting the next one.
